Topic > Guns and Gun Control - 1821

Crime and Guns. The two seem to go hand in hand with each other. But are the two really related? Do guns necessarily lead to crime? And if so, do laws that place restrictions on the ownership and use of firearms stop crime or protect citizens? These are the questions many citizens and lawmakers ask when preparing to create gun control laws. The gun control debate, however, is nothing new. In 1924, presidential candidate Robert La Follete said, “our choice is not simply to support or oppose gun control, but to decide who can own what guns and under what conditions.” Clearly this debate continues today and is the very reason for the formation of gun control laws. As an avid gun owner and enthusiast, I am against gun control laws and gun control in general. While I believe they should have tighter controls and offer more gun training, which they both already do, they should also be much more careful about how and to whom they sell guns. Guns are extremely powerful weapons. They can cause destruction, damage or even death. People need to understand this and I think this is what is wrong with today's society, the lack of education and proper firearms and firearms training. Weapons can be used to defend and protect or to threaten and kill. Regardless, firearms are powerful tools, not just physically but socially. As college students it is important to stay abreast of current events and issues circulating in our country today, one of which is the controversial issue of gun control. It is extremely important to pay attention to where gun control laws are going. The directions they take affect not only our nation and society, but also our future... middle of paper... guns help keep crime to a minimum. But the problem is that the news and media do not show the good side of guns and how they prevent crimes, they only show the “bad” side, which terrifies people and makes people think that guns are bad. Ultimately it's nonsense and it's the government doing publicity stunts to annoy people. From the number of groups involved, it's clear that the gun control debate won't end anytime soon. It is certain that in our lifetime we will see significant changes in current policy regarding firearm ownership. It is important to pay close attention to this debate as it will have a great impact on our lives. Do gun control laws help or harm the citizens they are trying to protect? Does the implementation of these laws take away our fundamental rights as citizens? Think carefully.
