Topic > Success of the National Organization for Women

The fight for gender equality and women's rights is a battle that has been going on for centuries. Over time, many women's activists and organizations have made strides to help advance the advancement of women in today's world. One organization that has made tremendous contributions and been extremely influential for women is the National Organization for Women (NOW). The organization has existed since 1966 and has more than 500,000 members and more than 500 local and university affiliates in all 50 states and the District of Columbia (National Organization for Women, 2012). The NOW organization argues that there is a social problem of gender inequality and women's rights and their goal is to “take action” by achieving equality for all women. The National Organization for Women has six priority issues that include: Constitutional Equality Amendment, reproductive rights, racism, lesbian rights, violence against women, and economic justice (National Organization for Women, 2012). Over the years the organization has been very successful in raising public awareness and creating social change. By using the Social Issues Process to analyze the organization it would become apparent why NOW has been so successful, where they still need to improve and where they are going. The first part of the Social Problems Process is making statements. This stage is where the authors of the statements state or create a statement that explains why a particular topic is actually a condition of concern (Best, 2008, p.18). The National Organization for Women (2012) clearly stated that there are six very important issues related to women to focus on. The issues listed above are the Constitutional Equality Amendment, reproductive rights, racism, lesbians… halfway through… coming soon. Their struggle will continue until they achieve what they set out to do in 1966. Works CitedBest, J. (2008). Social Problems Second Edition. New York: W. W. Norton & Company.
