Topic > To what extent was Doree controlled by Lloyd? - 836

In the story "Dimensions" by Alice Munro, the protagonist Doree has married Lloyd and wishes to end up with a "happily ever after", but ends up having her three children killed by her courageous husband. Lloyd first appears early in the story with a very favorable impression. Although he is only a few years younger than Doree's mother, he marries Doree and has two daughters and a son. However, Lloyd's image of good fatherhood falls apart early in the story. Although Lloyd treats Doree kindly at first, it is obvious that Lloyd is controlling Doree as the story progresses. In fact, Doree gets caught in Lloyd's traps in order to control Doree and this makes her loyal to him, but the relationship between them eventually breaks down. Lloyd is certainly not someone most people want to date. He treats Doree casually. Even in the story it is difficult to find Doree and Lloyd in good spirits. The only place the reader can imagine Doree and Lloyd smiling is when they meet in the hospital. As a matter of fact, meeting Lloyd makes Doree loyal to him. When Doree first meets Lloyd, he is a great gentleman. It's funny, has a strong and authoritative touch. He is the perfect role model for most girls and Doree likes him more than as a friend to her mother. Doree now opens her heart completely and has made it very easy for Lloyd to enter her. In other words, Doree's first impression of Lloyd made her loyal to him. In order for Lloyd to control Doree, or gain respect, he designs a well-calculated trap that he thinks would work perfectly. The cunning trick that Lloyd performs is to win Doree's heart with a sweet word: "He kissed Doree in the elevator and told her it was a flower in the dessert" (Alice Munro 6). From here, Doree leaves... middle of paper... murder, Doree doesn't leave him. Lloyd didn't think Doree would break free from his control, but saving the boy helped Doree free herself from his hands. You could say that the relationship between Doree and Lloyd is strong in a way that the murder didn't break the bond, but it's also weak in a way that saving the boy just broke the bond. In "Dimensions", Doree is controlled by Lloyd until the end of the story. It all starts when Doree meets Lloyd in the elevator. At that point, Doree has no idea that Lloyd is slowly setting careful traps to make her faithful servant. She is faithful to him and is controlled by him for a long time. Maybe Doree wanted to free herself from Lloyd's control before those nightmares came, but she didn't have the strength to free herself. Although in the end, saving the injured boy, Doree escapes Lloyd's control and decides to move on without him..
