The Actions of Three Great Men and How They Made Canada Stronger Throughout Canadian history, we have experienced many events that have made our country stronger and weaker. At times we were considered a nation with great potential, a great peacekeeping service, and even a nation whose citizens were proud to be Canadian. However, Canada showed signs of negativity as some of our actions made us look like terrible people and overall others had a “dim” view of the nation. During the 20th century, however, there were 3 men who demonstrated that they did what they did not only for themselves, but for the common good of the population. These 3 men, William Lyon Mackenzie King, Lester Bowles Pearson and Pierre Elliot Trudeau shaped Canada and made it stronger. William Lyon Mackenzie King was the tenth Prime Minister of Canada. During his tenure, he created the Unemployment Insurance Law, formed the Old Age Pensions Law, and appointed the first women to the Senate. King helped Canada become a stronger nation through these actions. During King's time in office, women could not become senators because they were not persons in the eyes of the law (The Government of Canada, 1). In 1930, Cairine Wilson was the first woman appointed to the Senate (The Government of Canada, 1). This action was performed via Mackenzie King. This was an important step for Canada as The Famous 5 had just won in the “Persons Case” against the Ivy Council of Britain as women needed to be seen as persons in the eyes of the law (The Government of Canada, 1). King played an important role in the equal rights of men and women during a time when women were seen in a negative role and as not having the capabilities of men. King created a......medium of paper......and The Suez Canal Crisis took place to separate the parties (The Norwegian Nobel Institute, 1). The Suez Crisis was a brief encounter following Egyptian President Nasser's nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956 (Dictionary.com, 1). Britain and France made a military pact with Israel to regain control of the canal, but international disapproval forced the withdrawal of the United Nations (Dictionary.com, 1). This act earned him the 1957 Peace Prize (The Norwegian Nobel Institute, 1). This now put Canada on the map more than ever as it was seen by the rest of the world as a caring, intelligent and also peace-keeping nation. With these 3 achievements completed by Lester Pearson, overall he helped Canada become stronger as it influenced independence, creation of a healthier nation and also a good reputation worldwide..
