The setting was in Geneva; the Swiss Alps; Ingolstadt; England and Scotland; the northern ice during the eighteenth century. This is a very cold, isolated and remote area. This novel makes many references to nature and takes place in open woods or, eventually, on open glaciers. The sublime aspect fits into the setting. When the monster kills William and Justine, Victor was filled with depression. Victor goes to the mountains to lift his spirits and experience spiritual renewal by looking at the atmosphere around him. Likewise, after a hellish winter of cold and abandonment, the monster feels his heart lighten with the arrival of spring. Even at the end of the novel Victor obsessively chases the monster, in an arctic desert, where the monster finds him dead. This icy white setting is supposed to represent a lonely, beautiful but deserted place, representing the heart of both Frankenstein and the others
