In Pharaoh's Army by Tobias Wolff is a war memoir that shares Wolff's experiences as a U.S. Army officer in the Vietnam War. Similar to EB Sledge in Good Bye To All That, who was a US Marine who fought in Japan during World War II, this memoir chronicles the pain suffered during this difficult period in their lives. EB sled went through numerous obstacles to enlist in the Marine Corps, similar to Wolff in Pharaoh's Army who joined the military to get involved in something important that will make them feel like they are someone and challenging their manhood. After failing out of school, eighteen year old Wolff was looking for meaning in his life similar to Sledge where he failed out of Marion Military Institute out of fear that the war would end before he had a chance to get in and was looking for something that was missing in their life that school could not provide a quest for adventure Tobias was a naive soldier at first very cheerful this caused resentment towards him from novice and veteran soldiers Wolff recalls that a ship mechanic hated him "because I did he hate? Could he have felt-I could have made him feel that I was a tourist here, that my life would not be defined, like his, by years of hard work" (Wolff pg.39) this quote showed the confusion he had with the reason why his fellow soldiers hated him and his conclusion as to why the soldiers hated him. Already feeling like a loser for dropping out of school he didn't want to fail in his role as a soldier after some mess up almost killing himself by falling asleep almost being maimed and killed by a propeller if he hadn't woken up first these few mistakes almost cost him his life, making him take his military service more seriously. After these events that made him...... middle of paper ......rmy couldn't help but think of those who died young he wondered why them and not him what was his purpose in life if he was been the one who survived among all his friends needs to find his meaning sooner or later. The post-war period had a different effect on Sledge and Wolff, Sledge attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute and earned a bachelor of science degree and later obtained his doctrine from the University of Florida. This takes us back to their childhood where Sledge had an educated and religious family who carried a pocket Bible that he carried with him into battles, while Wolff had no positive father figure and wasn't very religious Wolff is Catholic but not that religious a sled was this played an important role in finding oneself. with Wolff realizing that his environment has had a negative effect on him, he flees to England and manages to get into Oxford.
