Topic > Blance Varela's Writing Style - 987

Blanca Varela receives numerous prestigious awards because her work is considered surreal and radical, a recurring theme among many Peruvian poets of the time. It is this unique form of expression that earns her visibility making her one of Lain America's leading voices. The style in which he writes offers both a literal message that can be easily read and understood, and a figurative message that can imply a number of different things. Additionally, he paints specific images to help the reader truly conceptualize what he is trying to say. “Secreto de Familia” or “Family Secret” by Blanca Varela demonstrates her use of several meaningful and insightful poetic elements to express an opinion or convey a message she has. There are some things left to the reader's imagination and interpretation. For example, the title “Family Secret” engages the reader as if the poem presents something secret when reading. However, the poem does not directly tell the reader what the secret might be, but pushes the reader to discover it. The reader is confused by more questions by the end of the first stanza. The narrator of this stanza recalls a dream she had about a dog being skinned in the darkness of a butcher's shop. Many things seem unclear because at this point the narrator herself is confused and wonders where she is. Her voice and her questions initially seem unheard and silenced by the darkness that envelops her. Blanca Varela is known for using an innocent perspective in her writing to convey a more surreal and emotional message from the narrator. However, to understand what is really happening, he inserts another narrator who understands the situation and perceives... middle of paper... presumably, actually knows the truth, even if the mutt won't bark. The light dwells in the crust only when the dog or the dreamer wakes up and the light, out of the dark ambiguity of his dream that clouds his vision, has slightly disappeared. But when the dreamer dreams and the light goes out, every night she peels the "tongue of the front legs" in the butcher's shop. The family secret may be felt or seen slightly by the dreamer after the fog of her dream, but not so well understood because even in her dreams she is prevented from fully understanding it, the same way oppressed people in Peru feel the effect of government secrecy, but they have no idea what it might be except that the secret power takes away their voices. So she remains the skinned dog that sings and whistles, instead of becoming the flower that barks every night in its sleep...
