Being able to see historical movements, in a linear way, gives us the ability to see the problems of the present. When describing his books, Foucault often called them the history of the present. Finally, Foucault believed that to understand the present time we must look at past events. The History of Sexuality is also used by Foucault to further explain sexuality and his critique of the repressive hypothesis.
