While the North went through many economic changes and continued to advance in other matters as well, the South became stagnant. The North developed factors and made great progress in the textile industry; New jobs were created and women began to take a more active role in society. Where the South has remained essentially the same. Aside from a few inventions like the cotton gin, slavery still dominated the South and women had little to no say in any aspect of life. The economic difference caused great tension between the North and the South, and due to territorial expansion, there was considerable controversy over whether slavery would be legal in this new territory or not.
