Economists and others have explained that slums provide a "foothold for rural migrants seeking their fortunes in cities, thought to foster upward mobility" ("Down and out", 2014). slums are just a stepping stone in the overall journey, providing temporary and affordable living space. Edward Glaeser, an economist at Harvard University, agrees with this statement: “the buzz of the slums encourages entrepreneurship and hard work” (“Down and out”, 2014). Studies conducted suggest that people who have been living in slums, looking to expand financially, have moved on to bigger and better things. However, this is not evident in most slums around the world. Poor hygiene and diseases are important and affect most of the inhabitants. In Alexandre Trudeau's article titled In the Shadow of Suffering, Alexandre Trudeau explains his trip to Haiti and all the squalid slums and poor villages he saw. Trudeau (2003) pointed out that “in slums there are no health services, public education and functioning infrastructure” (p. 3).
