The concept of psychology, defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as: “the science of mind and behavior”, already existed in 360 BC, when Plato published Timaeus. Although there were successful discoveries in the field of psychology before Sigmund Freud's discoveries, yet Freud is remembered as the father of modern psychology because of his discoveries in psychoanalysis. The study of psychology before Sigmund Freud's discoveries was incomplete, because, without the discovery of the subconscious, the human mind is not navigable. In the 19th century, this "missing link" perplexed psychologists around the world. Psychologists of the time had two views on the relationship between mind and brain: the first concerned the localization of brain function, based on the idea that the brain serves as an organ of the mind. The second was that mental events such as beliefs, mental suggestions, mesmeric trance states and psychic traumas determine radical alterations in the state of the body. Although the concept of the subconscious was still unknown, psychologists still made great scientific breakthroughs. In 1870, the English philosopher Shadworth Holloway Hodgson published The Theory of Practice where he articulated epiphenomenalism. Renée Descartes perceived the idea that animals were purely physical automatons devoid of mental states, a notion which carries with it the implication that a completely self-sustaining neural mechanism can produce complicated and seemingly intelligent acts. In La Mettrie and, later, in Cabanis, this view was extended to human beings, but moderated so that only causal efficacy and not the actual existence of mental states was denied. In this regard, the French materialists anticipated... middle of paper...not only for his discoveries, but also for the effect his discoveries have on the modern world. Freud's call for people to understand their subconscious through the ways he speaks in his works is for the greater good of society. Society, according to Freud, is power-hungry and plants the seed of its own destruction instead of emphasizing the good values of life. As he discovered the hidden parts of the mind that help explain the modern world and all its complications, Freud simultaneously managed to give voice to powerful political opinions even in a time of war and anti-Semitism. Freud is still the father of psychology because he dived into the depths of the mind and gave hope to people in difficulty, showing them that by understanding themselves and facing their fears, they can change the way they think and feel, and therefore change their behavior..
