More than 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime (1). This shows how important it is to treat cancer, in the best possible way. Cancer is a disease caused by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in one part of the body. Cancer cells have certain characteristics, they divide rapidly by interrupting the division signals, they move to different organs, they become immortal since there is no tumor suppressor gene that tells when the cell must die. Furthermore, cancer cells also create their own blood vessels for oxygen and nutrients which are essential for the growth of the cell and is also known as angiogenesis. There are various ways to treat this problem, one is through localized treatment; surgery in which cancerous areas of the organ are worked on. Another localized treatment is radiation therapy which irradiates gamma rays or X-rays used to treat cancer (1). Chemotherapy is also a conventional cancer treatment; this is a type of systemic treatment, which means that it spreads throughout the body and contains certain drugs that prevent the development of cancer cells. For example, the drug cyclophosphamide binds to DNA during DNA replication. However this has many side effects because it is systemic, it also targets other rapidly dividing cells such as red blood cells which explains the side effects of anemia (2). One solution to this problem would be to create drugs specific to that tumor cell; through personalized medicine. Personalized medicine means tailoring a specific drug to the patient based on the genetic makeup of the cancer, the use of antibodies is an example of this. Another form of personalized medicine is to use magnetic nanoparticles to make the treatment more localized and act as... middle of paper......treat this cancer. I would use an EGFR antibody attached to the nanoparticles and inject it into the cancerous area. The nanoparticle is made of iron oxide and uses the iron particle in an alternating magnetic field. This field will generate heat and cause the tumor cell to explode. This will reduce its size and, more importantly, it will be a localized treatment so that the antibody can recognize the tumor cell and cause fewer side effects than the conventional way. Unfortunately some side effects may still occur; one major factor is that injected nanoparticles can spread to normal, healthy cells causing damage and side effects such as headaches. However, it is even more effective because in conventional therapy all parts of the body are affected, such as hair loss, loss of fertility, etc. But this is much more localized, making it much more effective.
