War is about the size of a black hole, and similar to it in many ways. Since time immemorial writers have used imagery, language that appeals to one or more of the 5 senses, irony, things that go against what is expected, and structure, the way history is written, to protest war. This form of protest has most likely existed since any time the existence of war and written language intersected and were part of human life. Through the use of imagery, irony, and structure, the writers protest the war. Vivid imagery is one way writers protest war. Crane uses imagery to glorify, and then soon belittle and undermine the war, through the use of imagery, placing positive and negative images of the war alongside each other. “The flaming regimental flag” and “the great God of battle” are placed before “A field where a thousand corpses lie.” (A) The purpose of these lines is to put images in the reader's head, of how big the war may seem, and then show that there are too many casualties involved in it.
