There are many phases of psychology that have developed over time. The Greek philosopher Socrates (469-399 BC) was interested in studying the reincarnation of the soul and mind, which he believed contained knowledge. The soul and mind were considered the representation of individuals. He believed we needed questions and answers to reveal the truth; this method is known as Dialectics (BC, 2012). Plato (384-347 BC) was a brilliant student of Socrates who dedicated his life to philosophy. Plato extended Socrates' thoughts in philosophy on life and the soul by founding his own school. Plato believed that diseases of the mind resulted from high amounts of pain and pleasure, impeding our ability to reason correctly. This brought forward the idea of desire, feeling and appetite. This is very similar to Freud's idea of Id, Ego and Superego. Aristotle (384-322 BC) wrote a book on psychology, entitled Para Psyche. He presented the fundamental ideas of today's psychology, for example the law of suggestion. However, in that period the study of psychology was mainly related to the soul and mind. There has never been any focus on the behavior of the individual. In the late 1800s, psychology established itself as an independent discipline. It was the work of Wilhelm Wundt that made the greatest contribution to the field of psychology. Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920) founded the first psychology laboratory in 1879 in Leipzig, Germany. He studied several conscious experiences in the laboratory (Guardian, 2009). He defined psychology as a science of consciousness or conscious experience. Scientific research methods were used to study reaction times. Wundt studied internal mental processes using experimental methods. The psychodynamic approach was founded by Freud (1856-1939). This one... in the middle of the paper... is called Little Hans. Little Hans was a 5-year-old boy with a phobia of horses. Like all clinical case studies, the main aim was to treat the phobia. However, Freud's therapeutic contribution in this case was minimal, exploring firstly what factors could have led to the phobia and what factors would lead to its decrease would subsequently be determined. Freud did not work directly with little Hans, he worked through communication with Hans' father. Freud suggested possible lines of questioning that the father could try with Hans, the father tried them and reported to Freud what had happened. In conclusion, psychology has developed over time thanks to new theorists and ongoing research. Each approach has advantages and limitations, there is no one better than the others. However, due to the methods used by theorists to test their theory, some may seem much more reliable.
