Sex after 50. What is the stigma? Nowadays, people who continue to have sex beyond the age of 50 are often classified as taboo. A question for people who look the other way on the topic: what is the "socially acceptable" age limit for sexual intercourse? When does it become inappropriate to have sex for two consenting adults? It seems that standard sex acceptable by society's standards is at 18 and stops at menopause for women, and around age 50 for men. . The thought of two elderly people having an intimate relationship is a kind of unthinkable thought, but what society doesn't know is that it happens more often than you think. Sex as we know it comes into play with three different categories. Psychological, physiological and social aspect. Psychological is the way it happens in the mind and the way it is influenced. Physiological, or biology, is how it affects the body and physical state. The social aspect is how society perceives, which can play a huge and important role in the definitive sexual roles people fill. Culture is a huge key factor in the social aspect of sex. In America, women are held to the same standard as men, while in the Middle East, women are more subservient to men. As seen in the cartoon above, the photo depicts two elderly people, who are presumed to have a long marriage. The woman tells the man "They're adult diapers with a thong... I told you I'd bring them sexy back..." To which the old man replies "Sweet angel of death, please take me now." The cartoon depicts the woman attempting to engage in sexual conquests with her supposed husband in a physical manor, trying to irritate him biologically. The older man physiologically has supposedly had enough of...... middle of paper ......watch and appreciate the humor the comic brings. In closing, the cartoon by E. Decentis does not adequately show the real world surrounding the elderly today. It is no longer considered taboo for older people to have sex, just as young people do. Once you reach a certain age, it does not imply that your sex life is stopped until the day you die. Medical events may occur that may make sex more difficult for some, but they will not slow them down. The human evolutionary trait that requires sex for personal enjoyment and entertainment rather than just to reproduce doesn't stop at age 50, but it could potentially make someone older more active. Psychologically, sex for older adults can be beneficial, as well as physiologically for living healthier lifestyles. After 50, people are not ready for liberation from death, but rather enjoy the time they have left.
