Topic > This I Believe by Thomas Mardik - 1507

In today's society, there are two topics of conversation that most people avoid discussing to avoid endless debates and unnecessary agreements that these topics can evoke with a simple mention of them; debates that educate no one to a different point of view but only cause people to fight with relentless passion to defend their point of view. These two hot topics are religion and politics. Although the sensitive nature of these topics is widely known, Thomas Mardik decided to ignore this notion and discuss his religious beliefs semi-publicly, making them the topic of his essay “This I Believe.” The main belief he discussed was basic and is quite common; millions of others around the world believe this same belief to be true. This belief is belief in God. The purpose of his article was to inform the public of his belief and to explain aspects of his belief, events that have strengthened it, and ways in which his belief is a part of his life. Thomas' essay is a semi-success mainly due to the way he tries to attract his audience in the three different areas. These three areas of interest are logos, ethos, and pathos. Today I will analyze how Thomas used logos, ethos, and pathos in his essay. Logos plays a relatively minimal role in this article because logos has a rational or logical appeal and because this essay is about Thomas's religious beliefs and belief in God is not based on rational or logical facts, it is based on faith and belief it does not fit into the logos. Logos are also hard to come by in this case because everyone has different religious beliefs, making a religious statement a true fact for some and a horrible lie for others. This causes religious opinions to be seen as opinions that ... middle of paper ... cause some to not even read the essay. I believe Thomas did a poor job of executing logos, ethos, and pathos in his essay “This I Believe.” The essay had its strong moments especially in the ease with which the audience could identify with Thomas's belief; even so, the essay lacked depth in many areas, which caused the essay to look too simplistic and boring. This same belief that Thomas holds and believes in so strongly has been the cause of great wars that have changed history and millions of people leaving their homes and their lives behind for a single belief. Overall, Thomas' belief is incredibly ingrained in his very being and makes him the person he is today, which is why I believe he will maintain this belief for much if not all of his life, however the way he wrote about the His belief, unfortunately, was not as strong as the belief itself.
