“Life puts obstacles in our way for a reason, so you can't give up when one comes along that you can't fight.” This quote was once said by a great grandfather to his granddaughter. The main point of the quote is that life is full of challenges and one must find a way around or defeat them. Kaye Gibbons, an exceptional author, suffers from a disorder called bipolarism. Even though the creative, outside-the-box thinking and intelligent author has struggled with many obstacles throughout her life, she has still managed to never give up, achieve her goals and make the best of her disorder. Childhood is described as the initial stage of something's existence. Bertha Kaye Batt Gibbons was born on 5 May 1960, she lived in an old, dilapidated house with no heating or electricity (Snodgrass p35). Kaye was born in Nash County North Carolina. She was the youngest child in her family; however, she was primarily raised by her grandmother, Martha. Kaye was raised by her grandmother because in March 1970 her mother committed suicide by overdosing on pulse-suppressing digitalis drugs (Snodgrass.p35). His father wasn't much better than his mother, because he was a self-harming alcoholic. Kaye's mother killed herself soon after discovering that she suffered from cyclic bipolarity, which is manic depression (Snodgrass p35). When Kaye was eight years old she was placed in a foster home because her grandmother was seriously ill and doctors didn't think she would make it. A woman named Mary Lee became Kaye's chosen mother (Snodgrass p35). By the age of twelve Kaye was working in the tobacco fields and attending the children's Bible mission camp at Falls of the Neuse River (Snodgrass p35). Kaye was never one to put herself out there... middle of paper... and make the best of her disorder. Kaye Gibbons, the woman she had become during her childhood, her difficult adulthood, and now, had written extraordinary novels even when she was bipolar. In this research, you learned a million facts about Kaye Gibbons. You have learned that it is never too late to keep striving to achieve your goals and make miracles happen. Kaye has lived a hard life; however, she was able to identify the positive aspects of her disorder.
