Topic > Reflections on the Family Crucible - 1074

We can see progress on the relationship front between Claudia and Carolyn. David attempts to reorganize his relationship with Claudia in an attempt to remove the pressure placed on her. However, the battle between Carolyn and Claudia continues to ebb and flow as the family focuses on the dynamics of David and Carolyn's relationship. Napier states to Claudia that, "...the family has unconsciously agreed to return to the war between you and Carolyn to save your mother and father from the burning situation" (p. 137). When the family finally breaks free from this structure, the exploration of David and Carolyn's relationship becomes the most critical aspect of therapy. Eventually, David and Carolyn are able to abandon their triadic relationship with their daughter Claudia. This restructuring of the family essentially alleviates many of the problems that led the family to seek therapy. Claudia is able to free herself from the tired routine of arguing with her mother and her unwanted behaviors decrease. Having removed the pressure on Claudia to become their source of intense emotions, David and Carolyn find themselves faced with the arduous task of exploring and possibly reorganizing their relationship with one of them..
