The Great War took place between 1914 and 1918, it was a global war in which the world fought the Triple Alliance, composed of Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy. It was one of the first times in history that every resource and weapon was used against an opposing nation. It completely fulfilled all aspects of a total war, as all civilians, both men and women, were affected by the ongoing war. Particularly in Great Britain, where everyone was driven to defeat the Triple Alliance. Using its political power, the United Kingdom used censorship, propaganda, and established the Defense of the Realm Act to govern all aspects of the country, in order to achieve victory on the battlefield. This is why World War I was a total war. Men were by far the hardest hit by the war, due to the conscription law passed in 1916. This included all men between the ages of 18 and 40 who were able to fight against the Triple Alliance. . The number of volunteers was dwindling, due to reports circulating about the terrifying experiences and living conditions the men would have to live in. The glamorous side of war was destroyed and replaced by fear. As the British Army dwindled, they had to introduce conscription to maintain the necessary number of troops. Not all men agreed with this measure, and those who opposed the conscription were known as conscientious objectors. These men were usually pacifists or highly religious individuals, treated as criminals by society; many were attacked and publicly humiliated. These men were forced to take jobs that helped the military. Men who refused this alternative to fighting were sentenced to death or placed in solitary confinement. This shows the extreme measure... middle of the card... Sun. Their whole life revolved around the war situation. Anyone who questions or rebels against DORA could be prosecuted. These harsh rules show that not only soldiers were involved in the conflict, but ordinary people were also deeply affected. To conclude, the Great War included all the factors of a total war; economic, social and political. The entire population was mobilized for the war effort and everyone's attention was focused on winning the war. As one of the first total wars in history, it demonstrated that wars are not always conflicts of armies against armies, but rather conflicts of societies fighting societies. Britain had to create harsh laws, mobilize the entire population and use all available resources to defeat the Triple Alliance. Therefore, there is no doubt that World War I fulfilled all the characteristics of a total war
