La Habana is the capital city and main commercial center of Cuba, making it the most populated city in the country. It was founded by the conquistador Diego Velasquez in August 1515 and has the best-known river, the Almendares River, which crosses the city from north to south. The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish and its location made it serve as a springboard for the Spanish conquest thanks to the treasures it contained. Furthermore, it was a stopping point for Spanish galleons loaded with treasure. Havana has the most historical place which is called Old Havana since 1592 by King Philip II of Spain. To protect this city, walls were built like forts to keep the city safe. In reality Havana is famous for its cities Vedado, Old Havana and Central Havana which are the most visited. Havana attracts more than a million tourists every year. Havana was initially essentially a commercial port and also suffered numerous attacks by French pirates, buccaneers and privateers. Ships from all over the world brought the products first to Havana with the aim of being taken by the navy to Spain.
