Topic > Analysis of "The Kite Runner" - 1070

During the event Amir used Hassan to help him fly the kite and Amir won. The main reason why Amir was determined to win was because he felt that this would make his father proud of him for once, but not only did Amir want to win for his father, he also wanted to give his father the last kite that he cut bringing it to his victory. After Amir won the tournament, Hassan made a promise to Amir, in the most tear-jerking words in the book “for you a thousand times” (67) that he would return with the final opponent's kite. For Amir the kite symbolized the acceptance desperately desired by his father, and desperation blinded Amir. As a result, Amir could no longer see anything else because he was so close to getting the one thing he was deprived of; his father's approval. Amir's desperation for his father's affection has become excessive and has compromised his morality. His desperation leads him to allow Hassan to be raped while he watches. Amir became convinced that Hassan was “just a Hazara” and also tried to justify his inaction by telling himself that Hassan is “the price [he] had to pay, the lamb [he] had to kill, to conquer Baba.”
