What does this mean for the poorest 25% of Americans Ehrenreich worked with? Looking at taxes, since 1998 the richest 1% have had to pay more taxes than the poorest 90% (Holmes). This means that the approximately three million in the richest 1% earn more money every year than the poorest 270 million. With numbers like these, how can we think that only 15.8% of the country is in poverty? Furthermore, how can we expect the bottom 90% of wage earners to survive without help? In reality we can't.
