It's September 2016 and we have yet to convince half of the United States that institutionalized racism is a problem in our society. Police killed people of color at a rate 2.5 times higher than white people in 2015. This information is not a new revelation and is no longer disputed by those who are still skeptical of police brutality based on racial bias. Instead, they have moved on to the argument that blacks commit violent crimes at higher rates, so it is not abnormal for police to be more violent and aggressive much more often during encounters with black civilians. This argument fails to acknowledge the existence and influence the “War on Drugs” has on police culture, policy, and procedures, while also denying to acknowledge the history of U.S. government officials who have sacrificed drugs . Looking at the motivations of some of these people, it seems that they are led to believe that the nail that sticks out is driven in with a hammer. For others, they have either been fortunate enough to avoid racism their entire lives, or they have cleverly decided that life would be easier by simply accepting submission to racism as a regular part of their lives. Regardless of their reasoning, they are supported by the white nationalist movement that has risen to the top of American politics ONCE AGAIN. These citizens are used as mascots of bigotry and are usually encouraged and praised by admitted white supremacists. Online, many of them refer to minorities of the same and/or different racial heritage with blatantly racist slurs from their whites.
