Substance Abuse Rehabilitation CentersAccording to the National Institutes of Health, substance abuse costs the government more than $600 billion each year (“Best in Treatment.”) . As a result, substance abuse and addiction are not something to be taken lightly. Substance addiction is a very serious brain disease that affects both the brain and the body. Addiction is considered a chronic disease, in the same way as asthma, that needs to be treated long-term to help people fully recover (“The truth about “rehab” and drug addiction”). ). Although the journey of addiction may begin with the initial decision to use a substance, after a long time the individual's ability to say “no” diminishes. Substance abuse and addiction require treatment, and while there are many rehab centers throughout the United States, there are many different approaches used to treat addiction, as well as new discoveries about different treatment options and relapse issues during the process of recovery. In 2001 there were 23.2 million people over the age of twelve who needed treatment for substance abuse, but only 2.4 million people actually got the treatment they needed, leaving approximately 20 million of people without any treatment. The problem with so many people not getting the help they need is that many of these people don't admit they have a problem in the first place ("The truth about 'rehab' and drug addiction."). The Treatment Episode of Data Set reports that in 2008, approximately 1.8 million people were admitted to substance abuse treatment facilities. Approximately 41% of these hospitalizations were due to alcohol dependence, approximately 60% of hospitalizations were Caucasian, and 14.8% were Caucasian. between the ...... middle of the sheet ......v. 2013. “Best in Treatment.” Psychology today. 86-106. np: Sussex Publishers LLC, 2013.
