Topic > The Use of Classical Conditioning in Dog Training

The test subject for this study is a two-year-old female Terrier mix rescue. This dog shows signs of previous abuse. When spoken to in a stern or deep voice, this dog instinctively cowers, shrinks to the floor, and lowers his ears and tail. Preliminary observation has shown that this dog is shy, fearful but eager for attention. This test subject will be called Penny. The research will be conducted using different and consistent commands for each behavioral change. The commands will be given by one of the two test instructors. Treats and praise will be provided to Penny at the beginning of the command to encourage behavior learned through classical conditioning. As time passes and Penny's behavior changes, the treats will decrease and the praise will continue to encourage the positives
