The caste system had a huge impact on ancient Hinduism, as well as the belief in rebirth and karma. Without those beliefs, Hinduism would not have been what it was. The caste system told people what responsibility they had based on the caste they were born into. The idea of ​​good karma leading to reincarnation or rebirth in a better caste was used to keep people in line while at the same time telling them how to live. Each caste had a standard of what it should do. At the beginning of the Bhagavad Gita, a war was going on in which both the opponents had members of the same family in their army. Arjuna was one of those members. When he arrived on the battlefield he realized that his family would kill each other, he didn't believe it was right. Since Arjuna was born into the “kshaktriya rajput” (warrior caste), Krishna told him “not to give in to this degrading helplessness” (2.3). Since Arjuna was a warrior, it seemed weak of him to let himself be attached to family ties instead of carrying out his responsibilities as a warrior. He was expected to “give up this petty weakness of heart and arise,” as he was called the “punisher of the enemy” (2:4). Arjuna did not agree to fight against his family but, according to his caste, he had to do what he was born to do; which meant fighting any enemy put in front of him. It was all about Karma and rebirth was used to enforce the responsibility of each caste. When Arjuna was uncertain whether or not to fight against his family members, Krishna attempted to persuade him that "No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul" (2.17) because "For the soul there is neither birth nor death in no time." " (2.20). The Hindu religion believes that the body is only temporary for the... middle of the paper... responsibility in life which is decided by the caste one is born into. However, by living among other people, one's soul may becoming “forgetful of the Lord” which leads to “[clinging] to pleasure” which would make it “bound” to the wheel of the universe In order for a soul to escape this cycle of birth, death and rebirth, it is necessary to connect with it god. The Hindu people believed that “by joining him… one ceases to be ignorant” and this means “birth, death and rebirth will be no more”. This belief in rebirth and karma greatly influenced the way it developed Hindu society. The caste system and rebirth go hand in hand when talking about the way of ancient Hinduism. Caste systems would set the standard of what each person did; each caste was different it is the right way to live; be connected to the God of the Universe.
