Discuss the role of leadership and how it can impact organizational performance. The role of leadership is the most important part of an organization. Leadership means having the ability to influence people to trust, believe and follow the vision. There are different types of leadership styles such as transactional, leader-member exchange, and authentic, to name a few. Transactional leadership appeals to the employee's self-interest which somehow involves motivation to get the employee to do what is necessary. This leader is primarily concerned with employees achieving a goal, then being rewarded for their accomplishments. “Leader-member exchange suggests that leaders develop different relationships with each of their subordinates through a series of work-related transactions.” (Hellriegel and Slocum, 2011, p.323) This leadership is a type of bond between leader and employee or mutual obligation. Authentic leadership is about knowing yourself, your beliefs, values, and acting according to a clear belief system through honesty and communication with employees. This leadership is more personal than the others because it draws from an individual's personal value and belief system. The role of leadership can impact an organization's performance in many ways. Excellent leadership can push a company onto the fortune five hundred list. For example, Harpo Incorporated Oprah Winfrey is a successful company that has earned billions of dollars over the years. The company is made up of several entities such as the Oprah Show, the Oprah Winfrey Network, and The Dr. Phil Show, just to name a few. This could not have been accomplished with a weak or ignorant leader. Many years ago I heard her give advice to the Williams sisters. The central part of the document evaluates the effectiveness of Mulally's leadership style and recommends whether he should continue with this style or use a different style. Mulally's Transformation Leadership leadership style is for Ford. The changes he made move the company forward and allow executives to discuss key product issues that previously reflected a perfect outlook for their division. This type of leadership allows for dialogue that leads to change to improve vehicle quality. I would advise Mulally to continue with a transformational leadership style for the time being. Ford is known for transportation, not cars. It will take many years for Ford to transform itself into a global company with a brand that people can trust when it comes to compact midsize and small vehicles.
