Feminism can be defined as the social idea that men and women should have equal rights. The topic of feminism has been debated for many years. During the early 1900s, the Women's Rights Movement was one of the largest social movements in the United States. Eudora Welty was born in 1909, right around the time women's rights were being discussed the most. Welty grew up in Mississippi, a common setting in many of her stories. She was an intelligent girl who liked to read and write. Welty was also an artistic soul who loved painting, photography and drawing. Eudora Welty began her writing career very early in her life. After attending university to earn a degree in literature, he worked for several newspapers and radio stations. As time went on, Eudora began writing larger works that she had published. Today he has many published works, including his very popular short stories. Many of Eudora Welty's famous short stories contain strong examples of character and feminism. Welty focused many of his stories on different varieties of people. Many of the characters he created were truly unique. For example, in his short story Lily Daw and the Three Ladies, Welty created a main character who is mentally disabled. (1) In The Petrified Man, Welty includes references to people in a traveling freak show. (5) The characters imagined by Eudora Welty really seem to make readers think. Of course, not all of his characters are out of the ordinary. Many of the people he includes in his stories are ordinary people, but their personalities add great depth to the writings.
