The coast was primarily a trading port that did business with different cultures from all over the Mediterranean Sea. This meant that they were constantly exposed to the ways of thinking and myths of other cultures. This would naturally mean that the inhabitants of Asia Minor would have to be more open to different ways of thinking if they want to maintain their business. Another reason related to this is that the Greeks were polytheists and had no central religious class to monitor and enforce religious belief. When people began to question the myths and stories of the gods, there was no group of people telling them they were wrong for doing so. This has led people to be much more open to ignoring their own myths and seeking their own answers. This access to knowledge of other cultures and the lack of a controlling religious body have made it very easy for some people to distance themselves from spiritual and mythical reasoning. As such, philosophy seeks to gain knowledge and answers differently than myths. Philosophers prefer to use logical, rather than circular, reasoning to develop arguments and ask questions that often inspire debate, in an attempt to understand truth and knowledge.
