Masochist. What is a masochist? A masochist is someone who harms himself. A masochist not only hurts himself, but finds pleasure in hurting himself. A masochist is frowned upon by society. According to Dictionary.com, masochism is “the gratification obtained from pain, deprivation, degradation, etc., inflicted or imposed on oneself, whether as a result of one's own actions or those of others, especially the tendency to seek this form of gratification. " Modern masochists enjoy cutting themselves and many die from it. Antigone knows what consequences she will receive if she breaks the law and that performing funeral rites is a right reserved for men, yet she willingly breaks the law. When Antigone is captured she is given the opportunity to deny what she does, but she fully agrees with all the claims against her, showing a masochistic thought process Ultimately Antigone is the one who kills herself and everyone around her realizes she had wrong with her masochistic actions. In Sophocles' Antigone the character Antigone is masochistic because she willingly brings about her own ruin. Antigone is fully aware of what happens if she acts according to her words, but she knowingly approaches death on the decree and cannot perform burial rites, but does them anyway. Antigone enters the house, after hearing the news and says to her sister "Well, a city proclamation, it is said, forbids anyone from burying him, even from mourning him.. . whoever disobeys in the slightest will die, his fate is sealed." : stoning within the city walls” (60, 33-43). Antigone knows that death is the punishment for burying Polyneices. He also knows that trying to bury Polyneices is a death wish... middle of the card... the first kind of death, a suicidal death. Antigone is not an innocent victim, she is not a martyr, that is, she was killed fighting for a great cause and she is not killed by anyone else either. The only other possible role Antigone could have been is that of a masochist, someone who knowingly brought her own death upon herself. At the time only men had the right to bury women, and there is a law that strictly prohibits burying this person, Antigone purposely breaks this law. Antigone has the chance to escape punishment, but she almost fully accepts her death sentence. He kills himself, his death is no one's fault but his, he will be saved, yet he hangs himself. The worst pain a masochist can cause himself is suicide, and taking pleasure from it is even worse... precisely for this reason Antigone is a sick masochist in every respect.
