Leadership has been studied and defined since the beginning of time. Throughout history, leadership theory has been characterized by the idea that leaders were great, courageous men and sources of authority and justice (Marseille). However, leadership theories have changed over time and new ones have been developed. Similarly, nowadays, a leader's leadership style is defined as the way a leader approaches action towards followers to accomplish a mission. Despite the fact that leadership styles are vital, it is concluded that the essence of leadership is actually an individual's personality and what provides the motivation, purpose and direction to effectively lead towards results. Personality types are known to be important in leadership because they help a leader develop followers accordingly, make valuable and timely decisions, and have a different perspective to get a job done. Personality shapes leadership and therefore also leadership styles. Without personality, leadership styles would not exist. Personality types provide the basis for leadership development, style, and the foundation for qualities needed for any leadership position. It is known that there are many personality tests that attempt to divide individuals into certain categories, or personality types, and are also believed to include many qualities that help shape leadership. Although most of these personality tests do not fully satisfy or fail to accurately establish an individual's personality type, due to the complexity of human nature, it is necessary to understand the importance of personality in leadership.
