Las Vegas is the most populated city in the state of Nevada. Las Vegas is a popular tourist city known primarily for gambling, shopping, and nightlife and is Nevada's major financial and cultural center. The city bills itself as the Entertainment Capital of the World and is famous for its established casino-hotels. Today Las Vegas is one of the world's top tourist destinations: approximately 40 million tourists visit Las Vegas every year. Nevada is largely desert, and most of the state lies within the Great Basin. Two-thirds of Nevada's population lives in Clark County, which includes Nevada's three largest cities. Areas south of the Great Basin, such as Las Vegas, are located within the Mojave Desert. Nevada supplies its water from the Colorado River. In 1922, seven delegates from each state covered by the Colorado River gathered to divide the river between each state. Nevada's population around 1922 was approximately 4,000 people. This small amount of people do not need river water as much as other states with higher populations. In the Colorado River Compact the allocated amount of the Nevada River would receive is 300,000 acre feet of river, or about 2% of the entire river. The Colorado River is 1,450 miles long and includes parts of seven states. The Colorado River is a vital water source for agricultural and urban areas in the southwestern desert lands of the United States. The river and its tributaries are controlled by a vast system of dams, reservoirs and aqueducts, which provide irrigation and water supplies to nearly 40 million people. Since the mid-20th century, intensive water use has dried up the lower 100 miles of the river, so much so that it is no longer... half paper......a. Las Vegas needs to educate its residents that their water won't last into the next decade. The time for a change and a solution is now in the present moment. Wasting water on lawns to make them look nice won't help homeowners in the future when they have to move to a city with water. Agricultural standards must change to allow for more sustainable use of water for their crops. The Colorado Compact must be revised so Las Vegas can support its 2 million residents and 40 million tourists a year on more than 2 percent of the Colorado River. Pollution does not play a major role in the Colorado River, but overconsumption of Mojave Desert water has led to the worst air pollution in the United States. As today's society expands and the need for water grows, there are changes in the needs to sustain life in Las Vegas.
