Among the heavy and dark environment that can surround Boston's inner-city neighborhoods, a program to give high school athletes access to educational resources stands out. The Boston Scholar Athletes Program reaches into the heart of Boston Public High Schools and provides student athletes with tutoring and academic assistance. The Zone's mission is to provide help to student athletes who may be struggling academically. Many of these athletes come from challenging backgrounds, so access to mentors and people who care about them can make a big difference in small ways. The measure of a program's success is only as good as the changes it makes. For the Boston Scholar program, the benefits must be seen in the performance of those who embark on the program itself. Students who fail to maintain academic eligibility may find ways to regain academic eligibility. Grades go up, but so do teamwork, trust and willingness to learn. One of the main aspects of the program is to encourage accountability and improve the atmosphere of some teams. The overall goal: to make athletes better citizens and stronger individuals academically and socially. The theoretical basis of the program is simple but effective: like-minded individuals help each other. Each meeting place is a "zone" that serves different areas, and other students achieve academic excellence through strength-based approaches. Collaborating with the local university population in the Boston area, the program has over 80 graduate and undergraduate students working with athletes at any given time. The total time spent on tutoring by all tutors approached over 500 hours per month, which is a significant amount of time considering the program only ran after school… middle of paper… the program may mean that it will promote higher standards of eligibility. Future responsibilities may involve expanding operations to other cities or further improving current GPAs. Boston is considering increasing GPA requirements for SAs in an effort to prepare them for the future. Much of this debate can be traced back to the changes made by Boston Scholar athletes. For my future role as a teacher, parent, or anything in between, the program demonstrates that everyone has a strength they can use to better themselves. If I am a coach in the future, I plan to remind my players to take advantage of these programs that emphasize learning skills outside of the classroom. Even though I am none of these things, I know that I can always help the community by supporting these programs that take an active interest in the well-being of our student athletes.
