We are currently living in what some call the era of technology and progress. So what does it mean? Does it imply any differentiation in our level of communication compared to the past? Has technology brought us closer, bridging the gap that exists between groups and individuals? Are we still as close as we once were when humanity itself was threatened by an unknown source like a plague? In John Donne's "Meditation 17", he states that "No man is an island", which still applies today due to recent technological advances, the expansion of the media and government laws. To start, John Donne's simile is relevant today thanks to the connection of recent technologies. Thanks to new sources of communication such as email and Facebook, people are able to stay updated on the events in each other's lives. John Donne uses the symbol of a bell ringing for the death of a man to show that we are all connected through knowing each other. He says “this is how this bell calls us all”.
