Transgender TodayToday, there are many unexpected changes coming into our lives every day that challenge our society. The gender issue is one of the hot topics among the new changes. Transsexuality is a fundamental part of this gender issue. After reading the article “Night to his day” by Judith Lorber, I found clarification regarding the social construction of gender. While searching for some facts about transgender, I also found many articles with different views of researchers, scientists and individuals who have transformed from their origins into transgender men/women. Now I will describe why some men and women want to change their gender, what are the impacts on individuals and society? According to research by the American Psychological Association, a transsexual is a person who changes their appearance. Clinically speaking, a person who was assigned female at birth but who identifies and lives as a man is called a transsexual man, or transman, or female-to-male (FTM); a male-to-female person (MTF) is a transsexual woman or transwoman (Glicksman). Some people abandon the transgender label after transitioning to their new gender. However, they only want to be referred to as men or women. But what if our gender identity, our sense of being a boy or a girl, doesn't match our physical body? From an early age we will start to feel increasingly uncomfortable. For some it is a mild discomfort, for others it is so traumatic that they would rather die than continue living in the wrong body. Unfortunately, because transsexual people represent a small minority of the population, the condition has been labeled by psychiatrists as "Gender Identity Disorder." With transgenders, the messy assumption is that the
