Hammurabi's legal code refers to the legal principles established in the Western world today because it is similar to both a religious text such as the Ten Commandments and a text that establishes order and rights like the Constitution. Similar to both the Ten Commandments and the Constitution, Hammurabi's legal code was written down and displayed for all to see, which further proclaimed its power and importance. Furthermore, it appears that it was open to interpretation in court cases, much like the way the Constitution was written for interpretation so that it could be applicable to court cases today even though it was written 223 years ago. While it didn't cover every possible social issue, it could be used as a starting point for where to take the case. One of the main differences between the code and current laws is that the code believed in the “eye for an eye” mentality, whereas today we believe in humane punishments such as fines and prison.
