IntroductionThe College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body for all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which must be met individually by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). As a nursing student, I am taught about NOC and the importance of referring to guidelines when caring for patients. As I gained experience in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I realized as a nursing student that there are areas in which I need further development. In this document, I will address two of my learning needs and my goal for each. I will also discuss the plan I created to successfully meet my learning needs before becoming an RPN and I need further insight to know what the scope of practice of an RPN is because clinically I am unsure of the difference in roles of RPNs working on units compared to registered nurses (RNs). I believe that knowing and understanding an RPN's scope of practice is crucial, in order to ensure patient safety, but also to protect your nursing license. Additionally, it is important to understand your role as a nurse to ensure patients' needs are met and to ensure you stay within your scope of practice while providing care. The purpose of the CNO's practice statement is: “Nursing practice is the promotion of health and the assessment, provision, care and treatment of health conditions by supportive, preventive, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitative means in order to to achieve or maintain optimal function” (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2015). The goal I have set for myself is to learn and understand the scope of practice of an RPN to be accountable for all my actions in the future. I also plan to take a course after graduating from the nursing program specifically for IV therapy because I feel this is a skill that requires practice and not having the hands-on experience through the nursing program at Niagara College is a shame. The IV therapy course is offered at Niagara College over a six-week period. I feel that by taking this course I will become more comfortable with IVs and meet the CNO's expectations in providing patient care as a future nurse. I will also use CNO standards of care when administering an IV solution because it is a drug and the 10 rights must apply (CNO,
