Emily Dickinson, one of the most iconic poets of the 20th century. Many people have considered how she changed the direction of twentieth century poetry, strangely Emily Dickinson only became famous after her death in 1886 and published only two of her poems during her lifetime. Her imagination, her writing style, and the way she captured her audience is what made her unique from many other poets and authors. Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts and would remain there all her life, and lived the last years of her life as a recluse, writing poetry. She had studied at Amherst Academy from 1840 to 1847 and at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary from 1847 to 1848. A complete and mostly unaltered collection of her poems first became available in 1955 when The Poems of Emily Dickinson was published by scholar Thomas H. Johnson.
