We've all had that feeling of envy, the strong desire to get or want something that someone else has. Whether it's someone's characteristics, status, skills, or situation, we've all had that feeling at least once. Envy is a curse of us human beings, although being envious is quite bad, it is also very blinding. Feeling envy allows us to feel and want what someone else had because we still have some insecurity about exactly what we want; we never see the great things we possess and the qualities that are unique to us. “But that's what everyone wants. It's the world's ugly secret. It is the unexpressed desire of the tide in every room and every street. It is the unsaid, the soundless whisper... millions and millions of people desperately wish forever to stop being what they are and be beautiful" (1108). In this play "Beauty" by Jane Martin, we see how envy takes over and blocks our positive view of ourselves. We all have our opinions about what it means to be beautiful, immediately we see that Carla is a beautiful model and says to Bethany, “Bethany, dear, I have three modeling calls. I'm meeting Ralph Lauren!” (1106). We immediately get the feeling that Carla is a beautiful girl because she is meeting with a renowned Ralph Lauren modeling company. We quickly see what Bethany thinks the definition of beauty is: “You are the center of every moment of your life. People stare. Men flock. I saw that they offered you discounts on makeup for no reason. Parents treat beautiful children better. Studies show that your income increases. Men must know me. It takes up to a year. I am continually horny” (1108). Bethany Clearing is declaring the things she sees in the car... in the center of the paper... she wants. For me it is better than beauty; it's better than brains for you. Different problems" (1109). We always want what we can't have and we don't realize that everyone has their own difficulties and insecurities. Nobody is perfect, even if it may seem that way on the outside, what happens on the inside is another situation. All in all, we have all felt some degree of envy, it's human nature and it's something everyone experiences in their life. We shouldn't let envy ruin our self-esteem and blind us to the most important things. Instead, we should embrace our unique beauty and let it shine through. Overall, the author depicted the main theme of envy over and over again and the resolution was anything but the realization that envy changes us and makes us different. “Envy comes from ignorance or lack of confidence in one's gifts.” -Jean Vanier
