Topic > Importance of rules in the home and family

"My wife and children" is a television sitcom. James Widdoes directed one of the episodes titled "No Rules", written by Dean Lorey (). Damon Wayans, George Gore II, Jennifer Freeman and Parker McKenna Posey were the actors in the episode. In "No Rules" the children accuse their father of being very strict and cruel, so the father decides to challenge them if they can survive an entire week without rules. If they survived the whole week, there would be no more rules in the house. On the other hand, if they didn't survive, they would have to go and hug their father and tell him "you are the best father in the whole world". Even though the children argued that they didn't need rules at home, they all went to apologize to their father. Children couldn't survive the whole week without rules because rules are extremely important at home. Children say they don't need rules because they are independent. However, this statement is invalid for many reasons. First, being independent does not contradict the fact that they need rules. Linda Milo, a parent-child connection coach, believes that house rules should be respected by every member of the family, even independent ones, because this allows the whole family to have equal rights. Secondly, the boys' statement does not take into account the fact that they are not totally independent. There were some examples in the episode of how dependent children are, for example Claire, who is the eldest daughter, depends on her father to wake her up in the morning instead of setting the alarm to wake up herself. Another example is that children depend on their parents to cook for them and when the father in the episode refused to cook, his son told him that he would eat the raw chicken.
