After his tenure in Michigan, Gregory became president of Kalamazoo College before founding the University of Illinois. He is now buried on the university campus. Champaign-Urbana won a tight bidding war for the campus location in their city. An important decision the school had to make was about instruction. After much discussion, they ultimately chose industrial education over the liberal arts curriculum. Gregory resigned in 1880, saying, "I am reeling under too heavy a burden of care, and vexed by what has sometimes seemed useless opposition" (Wikipedia Contributors). Gregory made this statement because he was having problems with legislators and could not continue his presidency. The original name of the university was Illinois Industrial University.
