The towering Alps and foothills stretch across the western, southern and central parts of the country. Wide green valleys, enchanting mirrored lakes and dense forests cover a good part of the territory. Coastless Austria shares its ringed borders with Liechtenstein and Switzerland to the west; Germany and the Czech Republic to the north; Hungary and Slovakia to the east; and southern Italy and Slovenia. To the north-east is Vienna, the capital and largest city of Austria, where around a fifth of the population lives. Population Austria has a population of approximately 7 million inhabitants. Most Austrians choose to live in the lower eastern areas of the country and just south of the Danube River. Vienna is also the capital and largest city, more than one and a half million Austrians live in Vienna. Other cities with more than 100,000 people living within them are Graz, Innsbruck, Linz and Scuzburg. Culture Austrians do not like to be classified as German, Austria is fundamentally Germanic in language and ethnic association. Some minorities include 40,000 Croats, 70,000 Solvenes, and a small group of Hungarians (11,000) and Czechs (5,000). Most Austrians live south of the Danube. Austrians enjoy a wide range of fine foods, such as the Viennese Clich otherwise known as WienerSchnitzel and many fine cakes and pastries. The average life expectancy for men is 72 years and for women 78 years.TraditionsIn May and June Vienna hosts the Vienna Festival. This festival is a celebration of music, arts and theatre. Austrians have a great love for music, many of the greatest composers were born and played there, many like Beethoven and other famous composers. Operas are also very popular and the Vienna State Opera is the most popular for such activity. Festivals play an important part in Austria. A festival takes place throughout the province of Tyrol in early spring. People dress up and pretend to ward off the evil spirits of winter. Lifestyle...... in the center of the card......nbsp; Austria has had a negative trade balance since 1945, although Austria has a large income from visitors. Austria imports means of transport, heavy machinery, fuel, food and raw materials. Austria exports timber, paper, pulp, textiles, iron, steel, electricity and machinery. Resources The largest natural resource in Austria is hydropower. "Much of the hydroelectric potential, however, remains to be exploited" (Prodigy1994) 40% of the territory is occupied by forests, which are used for timber. Austria's most important resources are graphite magnesite; iron; mineral; lignite; oil and natural gas.Agriculture"Two trends have characterized postwar Austrian agriculture: a decline in the share of the workforce engaged in agriculture and a decrease in small-scale agriculture, with farms of less than twelve acres disappearing or are consolidated." (Prodigy 1994) Some of the major crops include barley, wheat, rye, oats, potatoes, sugar beets, and corn. Meat production has increased significantly and dairy farming is more than adequate to meet national needs.
