Chinua Achebe is one of the established authors in Nigeria and the world at large. In this book, Achebe shows us how corruption has shaped the life and behavior of Nigerian society from the colonial era to current independence. “No Longer at Ease” is a book that talks about corruption and how it affects people. We even go so far as to talk about the traditional life, cultural behavior and activities of Nigerian society. “Corruption” is the cheating behavior of virtuous people in society and the country at large. The protagonist, Obi Okonkwo, is a very intelligent and well-mannered young man. He comes from a Christian background. Due to his outstanding academic performance, he was offered a scholarship to study in England by the Umuofia Progressive Union of his state in Nigeria. Although Obi got the scholarship, he had to pay the money back after finishing school and returning from England. During his four years in England, he ended up dating a lady called Clara who was a nurse and also Nigerian. Obi is someone who hates corruption and wants nothing to do with it. He works on the Civil Service Scholarship Committee. In my argument, I want to talk about how corruption is generally accepted in Nigerian society and how it has turned Obi into a part of such practice. For example, when Obi was returning to his village from England for the first time, they were stopped by two policemen. Suddenly, the driver's companion immediately got out and came over with the money to redeem them. Soon Obi turned to look at them and the policeman felt so uncomfortable that he didn't want to risk his life and so he refused to take the money from the... medium of paper... and all that he worked for he started to crumble. Everyone was amazed at Obi's behavior. He didn't even follow his theory of corruption. In all this we learn that, in such a corrupt society, no matter how much you try to stay out of trouble, something will surely push you to join in such bad conduct. That's because you live in it and so, no matter how hard you try, you'll find yourself doing a thing or two in that direction. Corruption in such a society needs to be controlled to prevent many innocent lives from being involved in such evil practices.
