Many different operating systems have been used or are being used on current computers in the past. You may also have used or heard of MS-DOS, Mac operating systems, Solaris, MorphOS, Unix, Android, and/or the Microsoft Windows operating system. The Microsoft Windows operating system is today the best known and most frequently used operating system by computer users; however, there is another operating system developed by Linus Torvalds, a Finnish computer engineer and hacker, which can be useful to learn despite being developed in the early 1990s (Goldsborough, 2011, p. 12). The Linux operating system, while perhaps not as well known as the Windows operating system or the Mac operating system, can offer benefits to those who take on the task of learning how to use this operating system. The benefits of taking a course on the Linux operating system could prove to expand Linux students' opportunities in their future careers. Based on key findings from the 2012 Linux Jobs Survey and Report completed by the Linux Foundation, “the demand for Linux talent is increasing, but finding these professionals is difficult” (Dice & The Linux Foundation, 2012). With the demand for Linux professionals increasing and the supply of Linux professionals not growing as steadily, the individual learning the Linux operating system can become an invaluable resource for a company looking for Linux professionals. This supply and demand of skilled Linux professionals could provide many profitable results especially in the field of mobile technology, including tablets, PDAs and smartphones.
