In a time when African Americans wanted nothing more than "to be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" (King) , A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, is the story of an African-American family living on the south side of Chicago between World War II and 1959 (Hansberry, 24). The characters' various exploits take place in a period in which sex and skin color defined value. This results in character traits and worldviews that many find difficult to relate to due to cultural differences caused by time. Beneatha Younger is a gullible, self-actualized, and self-sufficient young woman who is one of the main protagonists of A Raisin in the Sun. These traits arise from a desire to find herself while remaining independent in a time when a woman's entire identity was linked to that of a man. This was a time when men thought that women were incapable of having their own thoughts, values and aspirations, independent of those of any man. Beneatha displays the quality of being gullible, meaning she is too eager to believe any evidence she feels supports her own ideas. point of view, which can lead to susceptibility to faulty ideals and affect the overall credibility of everything one believes. This is evident in her interactions with Asagai, and while she doesn't have a bad worldview, it easily shapes her in her way of thinking, influencing her to the point where she quickly changes her outward appearance because of him. This characteristic does not appear to be evident in his interactions with the rest of his family. The variable that determines whether this trait becomes evident appears to be the amount of respect the person has for the ideals, not the ideals themselves… half of the paper… a century: 100 years in pictures.
