Although globalization has existed for centuries, it appears to many as a threat to the concept of the nation-state. However, according to others, globalization has brought great advantages to national states and should therefore be conceived as a useful phenomenon rather than a disadvantage. But if globalization is no more recent than nation states, it has nevertheless been increasing in recent decades. It has therefore become increasingly important on a national and global scale. This explains the concerns raised by many scholars who see this expansion as the end of nation-states. It is true that various aspects of globalization have changed the concept of the fully sovereign state, but it cannot even be said that it is truly threatened. This essay aims to demonstrate that, to some extent, globalization is indeed friendly to the nation-state, but the very notion of the nation-state needs to be revised and updated to adapt to the evolution of the modern world. In a first part I will explain what is meant by 'globalization' and 'national state' to fully understand why one might think that they are incompatible, and why this is not entirely true. In the second part I will analyze how globalization can be harmful to the nation-state.
