With any theoretical philosophy or methodology, the company should be able to adapt to its internal processes and use the methodology. Ideally, a manufacturer using all three philosophies would benefit. Six Sigma reduces defects and waste, JIT creates efficiency in all processes by reducing overheads and excess inventory. The industrial revolution led huge machines to work independently with labor-intensive processes. Then came Lean and with it the assembly line got smaller production machines and reduced labor, developing into Just in Time production with short cycle times and reduced inventory. Finally, Six Sigma uses a collection of tiny integrated computers to perform statistical calculations on the reduction of defects per million units. Developing principles of mass production have improved the quantity and quality of production over the past 225 years by steadily reducing the amount of labor and material needed to make a single product.
