“Music produces a type of pleasure that human nature cannot do without.” This quote from Confucius describes why music is an important part of the fabric of humanity. With funding for music programs being cut every day across the nation, students are missing out on the opportunity to enjoy something that can improve themselves as people. We wouldn't have some of the most celebrated and appreciated musicians we have today. I have always been a band student, but when I started playing tenor saxophone my sophomore year, I gained a new appreciation for music. I started with the Jazz Band and the Marching Band with tenor sax. By the time junior year came around, I became third clarinet, first president of Jazz I, leader of the tenor saxophone marching section, and attended various jazz events around the state. I became principal clarinet professor my senior year, as well as holding principal professorship in tenor sax. I also auditioned to be principal clarinet of the LaCrosse Youth Symphony Orchestra. The bottom line is that without being asked to pick up another instrument, I wouldn't have known that music was my passion. Since I excel at music, I have also become more proficient at math and reading. Music education is an important part of every child's educational upbringing because it improves children's self-enlightenment and growth, helps children's social skills, and improves children's academic performance. Numerous studies have been conducted on music students around the world that focus on how music education can influence sociability among children. A study conducted using online software provided some eye-opening results on the effects that music practice had on students. Of the 78 students interviewed, they had to answer how t...... half of the paper ...... evils. These skills are the ability to visualize patterns and mentally manipulate them. In simpler terms, these skills are needed to perform mathematical calculations. 78 preschool children took part in the study. Thirty-four children received private keyboarding lessons, 20 received private computer lessons, and 24 “provided other controls.” The children were administered four standardized and age-calibrated tests, one before and three after the lessons. The only significant increase that occurred was in students using keyboards. Although the effect lasted only one day, this period of time is considered long-term (Causes of musical training par. 1). Studies have also shown that some background music can concentrate and calm children with special needs, which in turn improves their abilities. grasp a concept or a task (Crncec par.1).
