Topic > The Benefits of Synthetic Sugars - 2766

We are all aware of sugar, the sweet and delicious substance commonly used in foods and drinks, but table sugar is not the only sugar there is. There are many artificial sugars that many people today are unaware of. In this research paper I will identify four different types of synthetic sugars which are: saccharin, aspartame, sucralose and sodium cyclamate. Synthetic sugars, or artificial sweeteners, have both positive and negative effects that can have a large impact on our bodies or a small impact. Synthetic sugars can be used in many ways, but they are most commonly used in regular, everyday foods and drinks or may be mixed with other artificial sweeteners. Synthetic sugars tend to look very similar to real sugar, so it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish them with the naked eye. Saccharin is said to be one of the oldest artificial sugars, it was discovered around 1878 in the Johns Hopkins University laboratory by chemist Constantine Fahlberg while working at Ira Remsen's laboratory among Remsen's assistants. Sugar was first used by Constantine himself when he accidentally spilled some of the chemical on his hand and later decided to try it with his dinner when he realized it tasted quite sweet. Both Remsen and Fahlberg subsequently introduced synthetic sugar to the public in February 1879 by stating that saccharin was "even sweeter than cane sugar." Some of the many benefits of saccharin are that saccharin is able to blend with other sweeteners to make up for each sweetener's weaknesses. Saccharin is also very useful for people with diabetes because it passes directly through the digestive system without being broken down. Saccharin dissolves easily in drinks just like regular table sugar. Saccari......middle of paper......contains absolutely no calories! Aspartame is one of the safest artificial sweeteners that I researched throughout the article; the most dangerous or unhealthy one was actually sodium cyclamate. Although aspartame cannot or should not be used for cooking and baking because it will break down in the process. Despite all the rumors that aspartame is “the most dangerous artificial sugar around,” many specialists disagree and believe that all the drama over aspartame ends because it is completely healthy to consume. I would advise people who would like to be healthier and want to slow down their normal sugar consumption to consume and go buy aspartame because it is very healthy and safe to eat. I also asked some people in my family about sugars and asked their opinion on which they would prefer to consume and most of them chose saccharin or aspartame.
