Topic > Peer Pressure in the Crucible - 647

In 1692 many people died during the Salem witch trials; who were significantly influenced by peer pressure. It all began when the Salem girls ran away into the night and went dancing in the forest. Then, when the girls were captured, some of the older girls threatened others and some simply had a great influence on others. For example, Abigail started accusing random women of witchcraft and the other girls did it, just out of excitement. Peer pressure can lead to all kinds of behaviors. As teenagers we all try to be accepted by our peers and will do whatever they want in order to be accepted. That is to say that the feeling of need to be accepted by one's peers occurs consciously; the person starts doing what his friends do without thinking about it. (Adolescent 3) In fact, adolescents are more likely to be affected by peer pressure because they are trying to figure out who they are. (Like 1) Therefore, they see themselves as their peers would see them, so they change to meet their peers' expectations. (Like 1) Secondly, they are struck by the feeling of having to rebel and be someone who is not what their parents are trying to make them be. (Adolescent 2) Therefore, there is less reliance on parents and adolescents are more likely to turn to peers to talk about their problems and choices to make. (Same as 1) Furthermore, their brains are not fully mature and adolescents are less likely to think deeply about their choices before making them. (Adolescent 6) Finally, the way a child is treated by their peers can influence how they treat others; this can lead them to bully others who are different. (Adolescent 3) Consequently, this can cause an adolescent to do something good or bad; It depends on who you surround yourself with. Peer pressure can affect someone in many different ways, from... middle of paper...... Also, you should always stand up for what you believe in and don't let people try to change your opinions. (Peer 1) Therefore, learn to say no and find a way to explain why you don't want to do what they want without causing confusion. (Peer 1) Finally, if nothing else, find someone to talk to if you can't find the strength to tell someone no. (Teen 6) Many of the people involved in the Salem witch trials fell hard due to peer pressure and had very sad outcomes. John Proctor or Tituba were judged and accused of witchcraft because people didn't like them because they were different and did things outside of the rules of society. John Proctor did not allow himself to admit his peer's lies and died with his pride. However, some characters like Mary Warren were moved to do the right thing and tell the truth, but chose to let others get to her..
